The healthcare industry is changing. Healthcare consumers and their families are increasingly demanding value from their healthcare dollar in terms of quality, outcomes, cost, and experience. Employers, as well as government and private payers, are seeking ways to slow their growing costs by shifting healthcare economics from a system in which providers are paid for the volume of work performed to one in which providers are paid for the value delivered. These market forces are driving providers to become more accountable for cost and quality of the care they provide. In response, providers across the country are answering the call to change by aligning with each other in new ways. These national trends are playing out regionally. Over the past few years there have been several announcements of physician groups reorganizing, health systems merging, and new ACO’s forming.
